Rare Steakhouse is a small chain in the CBD which appears to have either absorbed or grown out of the old Squire’s Loft in Goldie Place. It’s a nice old bluestone and render building sandwiched between a couple of girlie bars.

You have certain expectations when you go to a steakhouse. The interior will be a bit masculine; lots of wood, maybe some exposed stone or brickwork, maybe a bit of an industrial metal feel to the fittings. Well, these guys have taken a step forward in almost all of them (in an extremely brilliant way). Rare Steakhouse has all these things, but the wood is in pleasant warm colours and the stone and metal is softened by perfectly adequate napery. The passing late-peak hour traffic is unnoticeable through the thick walls and it is a pleasant place for a chat and a White Rabbit White Ale before the food arrives. Rare has a very calm and peaceful atmosphere with dim lighting to set the mood. Decorations are kept minimalistic to support the clean, simple yet modern look. There is also an upstairs seating apart from the reasonably sized dining area on the ground floor. The service staff are friendly and helpful with menu item selection.

Coming down to real business, these guys don’t miss any mark. The food is exquisite with a few dishes which should not be left untasted. Their scallops and ravioli are cooked beautifully and the flavour combination is spot on. The steak is an excellent quality cut, cooked medium rare as ordered, and tasty without the need for additional sauce. Their housemade chips are also delicious, crispy and lightly salted pairing well with the peppercorn sauce. And for those who feel like venturing out of the normal steaks and order something else then you’re in for a surprise. Their Coffin Bay oysters tasting plate is simply breathtaking. It is done 4 ways: Kilpatrick, natural, vinaigrette and mornay. The oysters are creamy and the mornay further enhances that. The Kilpatrick has good worchester sauce and bacon ratio, making it exquisite. The vinaigrette is also a nice compliment to the mornay flavour.
